#7: Golf Is Not Something You 'Play'
That’s more dangerous golf-positive language. Golf is deadly serious.
One of the changes we’ve each had to make on our journey to #GolfZero is to police our tendency to use golf-positive language. Possibly the most pervasive idea is the notion that golf is something you ‘play’.
Play is an important, non-violent activity that we all did as children, and still do as adults. Play is a necessary activity for all of us that enriches our lives. You can play a musical instrument. You can play Pickleball.
You cannot play golf.
Golf is an inherently violent activity. At its core, golf is clubbing a small helpless object until it behaves the way you want it to. Treating this kind of wanton violence like play is something we’ve been conditioned to do by golf culture.
Never talk about golf as something you can play. Never refer to it as ‘playing golf’ - instead use the word ‘golfing’.
It’s critical that in our fight to reach #GolfZero we do our best to stop normalizing this kind of golf-positive language.
