#15: Golf and Alcohol Don't Mix
Back when Enigma still had open data, one golfer posted an analysis of how many golf courses were issued liquor licenses every year. Their data showed a disturbing trend - more and more golf courses were serving beer and alcohol.
Even worse, golf courses regularly employ “beer cart girls” - young women whose entire job is to serve alcohol to golfers. That’s right, drinking isn’t just restricted to the clubhouse, it’s actively encouraged while golfing. Yes, it’s true that golfers are generally banned from bringing their own alcohol, but does that really make a difference if the course has a profit motive in getting the golfers liquored up?
Golf is dangerous. We’ve covered that a golf ball has more energy than a speeding bullet, and we’ve covered the high numbers of emergency room visits that are caused by golf club and golf ball impacts. Why are we allowing golfers to be impaired while they are casually strolling around wielding deadly clubs? Why are we letting them drive golf carts while under the influence?
The best way to reduce golf-related injuries is obviously to ban golf altogether, but we recognize it will be many years until we get there. In the meantime, one of the best ways we can reduce golf violence is to ban alcohol on the golf course. That means no liquor licenses for the clubhouse, no “beer cart girls”, and no BYOB.
Contact your legislators today and let them know you want alcohol banned on golf courses.
